If you have connected the USB cable and turned on the device, do not turn off the device or unplug the cable when the setup program is running. If you do so, the setup program will not go to completion.
If you have connected the device to your computer via a USB cable, ensure that the cable is properly connected and the device is turned on. Restart your system if necessary.
If the system still cannot detect the device, insert the Starter CD in the CD drive, click Uninstall. After the uninstaller finishes, restart your computer, and re-install the software.
When prompted, please reboot your system after installation.
If you do not restart the system, you may not be able to print and some applications may not function properly. This is because the setup program will update network-related files if you are connecting to a network and will upgrade Microsoft Windows installer to version 2.0 if the system is using an older version. These activities require the system to be restarted.
If you are installing the device through the network and the network path that you provided (when prompted) is very long, installation will fail to locate some installation files.
This is a limitation of the operating system. It can support only a limited number of characters in the full path (including filename) that you specify.
To resolve this, map to the network drive if you have not already done so. Or find out if the files are available on a network drive that has a shorter path; check with your network administrator.
Firewall software protects a computer from intrusion. However, this software might prevent you from setting up the device. To set up the device, try one of the following:
- Use the discovery option in the installer, which allows you to identify the specific device using its unique IP address.
- Temporarily disable the firewall during installation, and then re-enable the firewall after installation.
After you re-enable the firewall software, you might receive messages about applications trying to access the Internet if you’ve installed the HP Status or myPrintMileage utilities, or if the IP address of the device has changed. The following applications are related to these utilities:
After you successfully install the
software on your computer using the installer, complete the following steps:
1. Close any running applications.
2. Insert the Starter CD into the
CD drive. The CD menu runs automatically. If the CD menu does not start
automatically, click Start, and then
click Run. Browse to the CDROM drive
for the computer, click Setup.exe,
and then click Open. In the Run dialog box, click OK.
3. On the CD menu, click to add
additional devices connected directly to the computer or available on a
network.
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition supports two 64-bit architectures. One is based on
Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing (EPIC), and supports the Intel®
Itanium® processor family. The other is based on 64-bit extensions to the x86
instruction set, and supports both AMD64 and Intel Xeon with Intel Extended
Memory 64 Technology (EM64T).
This product supports only the
AMD64 x86 platform.
Digital Imaging Monitor icon unavailable after uninstalling
in Windows Vista
After uninstalling some HP device
software components on computers running Windows Vista, the Digital Imaging
Monitor icon in the tray in the right corner of the desktop is not available.
Note: If you reinstall
these software components, the Digital Imaging Monitor icon is available again
You may encounter problems such as insufficient disk space or get a blank printout when you do high-resolution printing (using settings such as 4800x1200 optimized dpi or 1200dpi) and scale your printout to greater than 248% (using HP ZoomSmart). Select the best mode (which uses PhotoREt technology) instead to allow the driver to automatically adjust to the best combination of print speed and quality.
If you try printing a document containing pages in portrait as well as landscape orientation, using the Handout feature, then you may get unexpected results. We recommend that you avoid using the Handout feature to print such documents.
The Minimize Margins option in the printer driver allows the device to print closer to the bottom edge of the media.
Bold, colored text doesn’t print properly in Windows 2000
When printing from a computer running Windows 2000, some Asian fonts that are both bold and colored do not print properly. To print these fonts properly, convert the fonts to curves or graphics or create a PDF file of the document in which the fonts are not embedded, and then print the document.
Unable to print in
Windows XP x64
If unable to print from a computer running Windows XP x64 without Service Pack 1 or with older versions of Service Pack 1 (such as builds 1635 and 1850), update the computer to the most current Service Pack. For more information, visit http://www.microsoft.com.
Toolbox status in network environments
In network environments where communication is required between server and client computers, the Toolbox cannot monitor the device. As a result, the Toolbox will not display messages about device status.
When scanning large items at high resolution (such as 2400 dpi), the scanning process can take a long time to complete and the file size of the scan created can become very large (sometimes over 2 GB). As a result, the Photosmart software is often unable to process the files.
When scanning large items, use the optimal scanning resolution recommended by the software. Use 2400 dpi only for scanning slides and negatives.
Scan box cropped in
the scan preview
When scanning some photos and images, the scan box displayed in the preview is cropped so that the entire preview image is not shown. Accepting this preview causes the final scanned image to be cropped.
To prevent cropping, manually enlarge the scan box.
Message about initialization/communication error appears during
scanning
If a message appears on your computer during scanning about the device not being initialized or experiencing a communication error, turn off the scanning software, turn off the device, turn the device back on again, and then scan again. If the message appears again, try turning off both the device and your computer, turning them both back on, and then scanning again.
If the problem persists, turn off the JPEG-compression option in the scanning software:
1.
2. Click Settings, click Scan Settings, and then click Scan Preferences.
3. On the Quality vs Speed tab, clear the Use JPEG compression for upload checkbox.
There are missing graphics or if they are printed with alternating light and dark bands, switch the Bitmap Output Threshold value to a lower one.
1. Click Print, Miscellaneous and select Special Settings.
2. Under the options, select Bitmap Output Threshold (K:).
3. Set the value to 30.
