General Installation and Setup Information
- Administrative
privileges are required to install or uninstall the HP Photosmart software.
- The HP Photosmart
software supports a variety of HP products. The HP Photosmart software installs
by default into the C:\Program Files\HP folder. You can change this install
folder during the first install of HP Photosmart software on a computer. Subsequent
installs of other HP products that use the HP Photosmart software will automatically
use the same folder as the first install. To change the folder where the HP
imaging software is installed, you must first uninstall all HP imaging devices
and the HP Photosmart software and then re-install all HP imaging devices and
HP Photosmart software.
- HP Photosmart
software will install in the same language as a previous install on the same
system. If you wish to change the language of the HP Photosmart software, you
must first uninstall the software for every device that uses the HP Photosmart
software, the HP Photosmart software itself, and then re-install. HP Photosmart
software will install in the language of the operating system of the PC by default
(if that language is supported by the HP Photosmart software).
- HP Photosmart
software functionality on systems that just meet minimum system requirements
will be limited. Use of many images, or videos, require a system that meets
the recommended system requirements for acceptable performance and reliability.
Microsoft Windows Service
Packs
Periodically, Microsoft
releases Service Packs that contain upgrades and fixes for released operating
systems. Windows 2000 and XP Service Packs are available from the Microsoft
Web site. Go to http://www.microsoft.com
to obtain updates.
Installation
Multiple HP Imaging
Products
When multiple instances
of the same device are installed, two entries appear in the HP Solution Center.
Typically, the first instance of the device installed has the name of the device
(for example, HP Deskjet X series) and the second instance is called “copy
1.” You can rename these by going into the printer folder and changing
the name of each entry. For example, “HP Deskjet X - home” and “HP
Deskjet X - work.” Changing these entries also changes the name of the
status icon and the device listing in the HP Solution Center.
Installation Problems
Recovering from a Failed Installation
If the installation failed,
HP recommends that you review the troubleshooting information in the printed
documentation. If
you continue to have problems, go to http://www.hp.com/support for more suggestions on troubleshooting
a failed installation.
Troubleshooting
For more troubleshooting
help, see the Troubleshooting information in the onscreen or printed documentation
that was included with your device or visit the support website at http://www.hp.com/support.
Device
is not recognized
If your device is not recognized:
- Ensure your USB cable is connected correctly.
Remove the USBcable, look at the end of the cable, and then
match it to the pattern on the USB port. Make sure that it is
not upside down. Insert one end of the USB cable completely into the USB port on the HP device and the
other end into the back of the computer. Be sure that you have plugged the
USB cable into the USB port on the back of the device.
Some devices, like Deskjet printers, have a USB port in front for direct connection
to a camera. This front USB port cannot be used to connect
the device to your computer.
- Check that
the device is turned on. Devices are not recognized when the power is switched
off.
- Try connecting the USB cable to a different USB connector on the computer.
- Ensure that
your USB cable is no more than 5 meters (16 feet) in length.
If your device included
a Setup Guide, review it carefully for details on how to connect your device
to your PC.
HP Photosmart Imaging Applications
You may have HP Photosmart Premier,
HP Photosmart Essential, and HP Photosmart Express installed, depending on the
number of HP devices you own and the install options you selected. All applications
may be safely installed on a computer at the same time, and you may use any
of the applications depending on your preference.
